What is CVE-2023-46748?
CVE-2023-46748 is a SQL injection flaw in BIG-IP. User input reaches a database query without proper parameterization, letting an attacker read, modify, or in some cases execute commands through stacked queries or out-of-band channels. Vendor description: An authenticated SQL injection vulnerability exists in the BIG-IP Configuration utility which may allow an authenticated attacker with network access to the Configuration utility through the BIG-IP management port and/or self IP addresses to execute arbitrary system commands. Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated
Why this CVE matters
SQL injection against a management product is rarely just a data leak. Once an attacker can read or write to the application database, the chain commonly ends with credential theft, persistence via scheduled tasks, or stacked queries that pivot into the operating system.

How to fix CVE-2023-46748

- Back up the configuration (and database, where applicable) before upgrading.
- Rotate any credentials, API keys, or session tokens that the vulnerable service touched. An unauthenticated RCE-class flaw means anything the process could see should be treated as exposed.
- Apply the patch in a maintenance window. For HA pairs, upgrade the standby node first, fail over, then upgrade the former primary.

How to verify the fix worked
- After applying the patch, verify the running version in the product's admin UI or via the vendor-documented CLI command.

- Run an authenticated vulnerability scan with a current signature set and confirm the scanner no longer flags CVE-2023-46748.
