|---|---|
| Actively exploited? | No public listing in CISA KEV |
| Affected | foxcpp maddy < 0.9.3 |
| Fixed in | maddy 0.9.3 |
| Type (CWE) | CWE-90: CWE-90: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an LDAP Query ('LDAP Injection') |
What is CVE-2026-40193?
maddy is a composable, all-in-one mail server. Versions prior to 0.9.3 contain an LDAP injection vulnerability in the auth.ldap module where user-supplied usernames are interpolated into LDAP search filters and DN strings via strings.ReplaceAll() without any LDAP filter escaping, despite the go-ldap/ldap/v3 library's ldap.EscapeFilter() function being available in the same import. This affects three code paths: the Lookup() filter, the AuthPlain() DN template, and the AuthPlain() filter. An attacker with network access to the SMTP submission or IMAP interface can inject arbitrary LDAP filter expressions through the username field in AUTH PLAIN or LOGIN commands.
Am I affected?
Run the version check that matches your platform:
# Linux
dpkg -s maddy 2>/dev/null | grep -i version
rpm -q maddy 2>/dev/null
maddy --version 2>/dev/null
Compare what you see against the Affected row above (foxcpp maddy < 0.9.3). If your build sits inside that range, you are exposed and should patch.
How to fix CVE-2026-40193
The primary fix is to upgrade maddy to the patched build. Use the commands for your platform below; the patched version listed in the vendor advisory is: maddy 0.9.3.
Ubuntu / Debian
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade maddy
maddy --version 2>/dev/null || dpkg -s maddy | grep -i version
RHEL / CentOS / Rocky / AlmaLinux
sudo dnf upgrade --security maddy -y
rpm -q maddy
SUSE / openSUSE
sudo zypper patch --category security
rpm -q maddy

If you can't patch immediately
If you cannot apply the patched version today, restrict exposure with one of the following runnable controls. None replace the patch.
Network restriction (Linux, nftables)
# Block inbound traffic to the affected service from untrusted networks
sudo nft add table inet filter
sudo nft 'add chain inet filter input { type filter hook input priority 0 ; }'
sudo nft 'add rule inet filter input tcp dport {443, 80} ip saddr != 10.0.0.0/8 drop'
sudo nft list ruleset
Service-level fallback
# If the affected feature is optional, stop the service until the patch is applied
sudo systemctl stop maddy
sudo systemctl disable maddy
How to verify the fix worked
# Linux
maddy --version 2>/dev/null || dpkg -s maddy | grep -i version
rpm -q maddy 2>/dev/null || true
# Windows
winget list | findstr /I "maddy"
Get-HotFix | Sort-Object InstalledOn -Descending | Select-Object -First 5
Expected: the reported version is at or above maddy 0.9.3. Restart any services that loaded the old library (systemctl restart <service> on Linux, restart the Windows service or reboot when prompted). For network appliances, run show version on the device and confirm the build matches the patched release.

Is CVE-2026-40193 actually being exploited?
According to the data sources above, no public confirmation of in-the-wild exploitation at this time. Either way, the fix is the same: apply the vendor patch.
Do I need to reboot after patching?
For OS or kernel updates, yes. For most userland packages a systemctl restart <service> is enough. Any process that loaded the old shared library keeps using it until restarted, so when in doubt, reboot.
What is the CVSS score?
8.2 (high). Refer to the vendor advisory for the exact vector string.
