How to Fix CVE-2026-40302: Cross-site scripting in zrok
By Sai Kiran Pandrala. Last verified: 2026-05-25.
| Severity | 6.1 (Medium) |
|---|---|
| Actively exploited? | No public listing in CISA KEV |
| Affected | openziti zrok < 2.0.1 |
| Fixed in | zrok 2.0.1 |
| Type (CWE) | CWE-79: CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting') |
What is CVE-2026-40302?
zrok is software for sharing web services, files, and network resources. Prior to version 2.0.1, the proxyUi template engine uses Go's text/template (which performs no HTML escaping) instead of html/template. The GitHub OAuth callback handlers in both publicProxy and dynamicProxy embed the attacker-controlled refreshInterval query parameter verbatim into an error message when time.ParseDuration fails, and render that error unescaped into HTML. An attacker can deliver a crafted login URL to a victim; after the victim completes the GitHub OAuth flow, the callback page executes arbitrary JavaScript in the OAuth server's origin.
Am I affected?
Run the version check that matches your platform:
# Linux
dpkg -s zrok 2>/dev/null | grep -i version
rpm -q zrok 2>/dev/null
zrok --version 2>/dev/null
Compare what you see against the Affected row above (openziti zrok < 2.0.1). If your build sits inside that range, you are exposed and should patch.
How to fix CVE-2026-40302
The primary fix is to upgrade zrok to the patched build. Use the commands for your platform below; the patched version listed in the vendor advisory is: zrok 2.0.1.
Ubuntu / Debian
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade zrok
zrok --version 2>/dev/null || dpkg -s zrok | grep -i version
RHEL / CentOS / Rocky / AlmaLinux
sudo dnf upgrade --security zrok -y
rpm -q zrok
SUSE / openSUSE
sudo zypper patch --category security
rpm -q zrok

If you can't patch immediately
If you cannot apply the patched version today, restrict exposure with one of the following runnable controls. None replace the patch.
Network restriction (Linux, nftables)
# Block inbound traffic to the affected service from untrusted networks
sudo nft add table inet filter
sudo nft 'add chain inet filter input { type filter hook input priority 0 ; }'
sudo nft 'add rule inet filter input tcp dport {443, 80} ip saddr != 10.0.0.0/8 drop'
sudo nft list ruleset
Service-level fallback
# If the affected feature is optional, stop the service until the patch is applied
sudo systemctl stop zrok
sudo systemctl disable zrok
How to verify the fix worked
# Linux
zrok --version 2>/dev/null || dpkg -s zrok | grep -i version
rpm -q zrok 2>/dev/null || true
# Windows
winget list | findstr /I "zrok"
Get-HotFix | Sort-Object InstalledOn -Descending | Select-Object -First 5
Expected: the reported version is at or above zrok 2.0.1. Restart any services that loaded the old library (systemctl restart <service> on Linux, restart the Windows service or reboot when prompted). For network appliances, run show version on the device and confirm the build matches the patched release.

Is CVE-2026-40302 actually being exploited?
According to the data sources above, no public confirmation of in-the-wild exploitation at this time. Either way, the fix is the same: apply the vendor patch.
Do I need to reboot after patching?
For OS or kernel updates, yes. For most userland packages a systemctl restart <service> is enough. Any process that loaded the old shared library keeps using it until restarted, so when in doubt, reboot.
What is the CVSS score?
6.1 (medium). Refer to the vendor advisory for the exact vector string.
Where is the official advisory?
