Hyundai injector noise diesel: Fix

I had this exact issue on a Hyundai Grand i10 Nios (2022) last Sunday at a Delhi NCR workshop, the odo was sitting at 84000 km and the owner had been ignoring the warning for two weeks. Labour at that shop runs around ₹600/hr (roughly $5.40/hr), and the total bill landed at ₹9400 including parts. Diesel injector cleaning on Hyundai CRDi engines is one of those jobs where the diagnosis matters more than the cleaning itself. I had a Hyundai Verna SX(O) Turbo (2024) come in with a lumpy idle and the owner convinced it was injectors. It was not. A clogged air filter throwing off the MAF reading was the real cause. Took me twenty minutes with a Mastech MS8221 to prove it.
Real symptoms versus assumed symptoms
Owners walk in saying "injector problem" when they mean rough idle, black smoke, or mileage drop. Those three symptoms have at least eight upstream causes before injectors. I check fuel pressure first, ICP sensor next, then turbo boost, then EGR position. If those are all clean, then I move to injector return-flow tests. A Hyundai CRDi 1.5 from 2020 onwards uses Bosch CRI 2.20 piezo injectors. Return flow above 30 ml in 30 seconds at 2000 rpm on any one injector means that injector is leaking past the needle seat. That is a rebuild, not a clean.
My cleaning process: what actually moves the needle
- Step one, fuel sample. Pull 200 ml from the return line into a glass jar. Let it settle for 10 minutes. Water at the bottom or a brown sediment layer means the fuel itself is contaminated. No injector cleaning solves contaminated fuel. Drain the tank and replace the fuel filter (₹850 for the Hyundai OE filter, 28113-09000 family). Skip this step and you re-contaminate the cleaned injectors within a tank.
- In-tank cleaner for stage one. Liqui Moly Diesel Purge (₹1,650) or Wynn's Diesel Power 3 (₹950) poured into a half-full tank, driven 200 km mixed cycle. This is enough for soft carbon deposits inside the nozzle. I see roughly 60 percent recovery of mild cases at this stage.
- Direct-line clean for stage two. If the in-tank route fails, I disconnect the fuel rail return, feed a BG 244 canister directly into the high-pressure pump inlet at idle for 20 minutes. The engine runs on the cleaner alone, no diesel. This dissolves harder deposits. Cost in Delhi NCR is around ₹2,200 for the chemical and ₹1200 for the labour.
- Ultrasonic bench clean for stage three. Injectors out, sent to a Bosch authorized service centre. Hyundai CRDi injectors come back with a flow test report. Each injector should match within 3 percent of the others at 1600 bar. If one is off by more than 5 percent, it gets rebuilt or replaced. Bosch injector test plus clean is ₹1,200 per injector. New CRI 2.20 injector is ₹14,500 each. Rebuild kit is ₹3,800.
Hyundai CRDi injector quirks I keep seeing
The 1.5 CRDi U2 engine from 2020 onwards has a known issue with cylinder 3 injector being slightly hotter than the other three. Owners who do a lot of stop-start driving in Delhi NCR traffic see cylinder 3 fail first, usually around 75,000 km. The fix is to replace all four injectors as a set, not just the one. Mismatched injector flow rates cause the ECU to throw P0263 / P0266 / P0269 / P0272 codes for cylinder balance, even though only one is bad. I learned this on my third repeat ticket, replaced one injector twice before I figured out the pattern.
The Kia Seltos 1.5 CRDi shares this engine. Same fix applies. If you are in Bengaluru, Bosch Service at Indiranagar charges ₹4,200 per injector for the full test-clean-rebuild cycle. If you are in Mumbai, Wadiwala Auto on Lamington Road is the go-to and they charge ₹4,800 with a same-day turnaround.
Diagnostic codes I actually look up
P0087, fuel rail pressure too low. Usually pump or filter, not injectors. P0088. fuel rail pressure too high. Regulator stuck. P0201 through P0204, individual injector circuit issues. P0263 through P0272: cylinder contribution. P1186, fuel pressure sensor circuit. I clear these one at a time, drive 5 km, re-scan. If only P0201 comes back, that is your bad injector. If three come back together, you have a pressure issue feeding all three.
What I tell owners not to do
Do not use the ₹250 "injector cleaner" bottles from the local accessories shop. Most are kerosene with food colouring. They strip the fuel pump seals. I have replaced two high-pressure pumps on Hyundai CRDi engines this year that started with a cheap cleaner, ended with a ₹38,000 pump replacement. Stick to Bosch, Liqui Moly, BG, or Hyundai genuine.
Do not let anyone "test" injectors by cracking the fuel lines on a running engine. Common rail diesels run 1800 bar at the rail. The spray will pierce skin and cause a fuel embolism. I have seen one workshop fatality from this in my career. Use a proper return flow test setup, never the loosen-the-nut method.
What a real injector job costs in Delhi NCR in 2026
Diagnostic scan with the Autel MaxiCOM MX808. ₹500. In-tank cleaner with one tank drive, ₹2,000 chemical plus fuel. Direct-line clean: ₹3400. Bench clean four injectors, ₹4,800 plus ₹2400 R and R labour. Full injector set replacement. ₹58,000 parts plus ₹3600 labour. So a worst-case full job at a Mumbai mechanic at ₹650/hr lands around ₹62,000. At a Delhi NCR mechanic at ₹600/hr it lands closer to ₹64000. Plan for the middle of that range.
