What is actually happening

Last Sunday a LG dishwasher came into my friend's workshop in Pune throwing a hard IE fault. The owner had already paid ₹1,800 to a so-called authorized tech who swapped the drain hose and called it done. Two cycles later the fault came back. That is the kind of half-fix that has paid my Sunday lunch tab for the last six years. A LG water-inlet fault: IE, fires when the control board does not see the expected water level inside the fill window. That window is typically 90 to 180 seconds. If the float switch does not lift in that time, the board aborts.

LG dishwashers have a habit of cooking their drain pump impeller around year four. I have replaced the pump on at least eight LG units in Pune over the last twelve months, and every single time the impeller showed the same fatigue cracks at the hub.

In Pune the dominant cause is municipal water-supply pressure dropping below 0.5 bar, most LG inlet valves need 1.0 bar minimum to open consistently. The second most common cause is a clogged inlet screen at the back of the machine where the supply line connects. The third is the solenoid itself, which fails at around 2,500 to 3,000 fill cycles on most LG machines.

Diagnostic sequence on a LG

  1. Confirm tap pressure first. Close the dishwasher inlet valve at the wall, disconnect the hose, fire it into a measuring bucket for 30 seconds. You want 3 liters or more: that translates to 6 liters per minute, which is the LG minimum.
  2. Clean the inlet screen. Two minutes with an old toothbrush and white vinegar. This fixes maybe 25 percent of the IE faults I see on LG units.
  3. Measure solenoid resistance. Disconnect the wiring harness from the inlet valve, put your Fluke 117 across the coil terminals. LG valves should read 600 to 1,200 ohms cold. Open circuit means the coil is dead, expect ₹1,400 to ₹2,200 for the replacement valve.
  4. Verify the float switch. Lift the float manually with the door open, you should hear the microswitch click. No click means a stuck float or a failed switch.
  5. Plug in an Autel MX808 with the appliance harness (yes, the automotive Autel works for this when paired with the right adapter). Read the live water-level sensor voltage during a fill cycle. A flat trace means the sensor is dead.

Verification before I close the ticket

Before I hand a LG dishwasher back to the customer and accept the cash, I run a fixed verification loop. This is what protects me from the callback. Short list:

  1. One complete Normal cycle with a light load. Watch every fill and drain event. Expected runtime is about 110 minutes on a LG.
  2. Read the fault buffer at the end of the cycle. Expected count of new faults: zero.
  3. Measure the heated-dry final temperature with the infrared thermometer through the vent. Expected reading on a LG unit is 62 to 68 degrees.
  4. Inspect the door gasket for water trace lines. If the gasket is wet across the bottom 30 cm, the machine is not seating the door correctly even though the latch engaged.
  5. Confirm zero residual water in the sump after the drain cycle. LG machines are supposed to leave 50 ml or less in the sump. More than that means an incomplete drain.

If any of those five checks fail, the ticket is not done. I tell the customer up front that I will be back tomorrow on my own dime, that policy has paid for itself many times over in repeat business and referrals around Pune.

India context and pricing realities

One thing I want to make crystal clear before you call any technician for a LG dishwasher in Pune, Coimbatore, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, or Hyderabad: the service-call fee structure varies wildly. Authorized LG service partners charge ₹650 to ₹900 just to walk in the door, plus their parts are marked up 35 to 60 percent over what I pay at the wholesale market in SP Road in Pune.

Independent technicians: and I include myself here, typically charge ₹450 to ₹650 per labor hour, ₹500 to ₹800 service call, and source parts at retail through Vijay Sales, Reliance Digital, or directly from importers. For an out-of-warranty unit, the independent route is almost always cheaper. For an in-warranty unit, you must use the authorized partner or the warranty voids. there is no way around that.

A note on Amazon India and Flipkart parts: the LG OEM parts listed are usually genuine, but the third-party sellers offering identical part numbers at 40 percent off are almost always Chinese clones. They fit, they work for a few months, and then they fail in a way that takes out adjacent components. I have learned that lesson three times. Pay the OEM price.

If I hand this LG ticket off: because I am on holiday, or because the customer prefers a closer technician, the three lines I leave in the WhatsApp handover note are these. First, the exact symptom signature on the LG: not a paraphrase, the exact display string and the cycle stage at which it appeared. Second, the diagnostic that gave me the highest signal in the least time. For most LG machines, that is a Fluke 117 reading on the suspect sensor combined with a Launch X431 live-data trace. Third, the verification cycle that justified closing the ticket.

That trio is what turns a one-off appliance repair into a runbook entry the next technician can read in two minutes and act on. Service work scales only if you write it down. I keep my own runbook in a Notion database that any tech in our Pune WhatsApp group can search.

One last thing. If you are the homeowner reading this and you are trying to decide whether to fix it yourself or call someone: the fault we just walked through is fixable by an attentive owner with the right multimeter and ninety minutes of patience. If you do not own a multimeter, get one. a Fluke 117 will pay for itself the first time it saves you from buying a control board you did not need. If you are not comfortable with mains-voltage work near water, call someone. There is no shame in it, and the ₹500 service call is cheap insurance against an electrocution.
